I talked to a mother today who has lived in Sydney, Australia for the past 2
years. She had her little girl there 7 months ago and just recently moved
back to the USA. She called me to ask about increasing her milk supply and
went on to tell me that the baby only nurses 3 times per day and is eating 3
solid meals per day. She stated that she had been encouraged to start her
baby on cereal at 14 weeks and her baby who was born at 6 lbs is now 13
pounds. At least she is nursing the baby prior to feeds but she says she was
told that the baby needed more solids. She brought the baby in for a weight
check in our office to get a baseline here and the baby looked healthy. I am
curious if this is the norm in Syndey, to start solids at such a young age.
She mentioned a great clinic where there was lots of breastfeeding and mother
support. We discussed how the AAP doesn't recommend even starting solids for
6 months and that the breastmilk should still be the bulk of her nutrition.
I did recommend that since she was concerned about her milk supply that she
may want to add a feed in (baby nurses 8am, 1pm and 5pm) around bedtime. She
was told not to let baby fall asleep at the breast so she doesn't get used to
it. Just wondering if this is a cultural thing or just the advise of one
practitioner she had run into. Any ideas? Claudia G RN/IBCLC
