Lactnetters. I have been part of a research project that is examing dietary intake in lactating
mothers/postpartum non-lactating mothers.. The mothers answer a questionaire which examines
frequency of designated foods eaten...whether or not salt or sugar is added to foods. They taste
two solutions which are prepared under lab conditions (sweet and salty) The most significant
finding is that lactating mothers show a marked preference for low salt foods. (the sodium
contentents were calculated by a dietician).
The mothers deny being exposed to myths that might explain this. Does anyone have any ideas why
we are getting these results. Everyone's gut feelings at the beginning were that lactating
women would desire more salt. Less significant is a slightly less desire for fat. As expected
lactating women had a greater weight loss. Women were recruited after 6 weeks postpartum. TIA
