Dear Friends:

A healthcare professional from Denmark described a way that nurses in some
Danish hospitals use a draw sheet to secure a baby in bed. Anyone from Denmark
care to elaborate?

Helen Ball PhD described her study in a UK hospital where some mothers used
a side-car sleeping arrangement. My opinion about that, for the US, is that
the side-car arrangement would be a terrific compromise between the two sides
of the infant sleep imbroglio.....a separate sleep surface yet close enough
and easy enough for nighttime nursing. Dr. Ball found, after videotaping
mothers at night, that both baby in bed and baby in side car supported
breastfeeding.

The side-car sleeping arrangement is sold in the US as the Arm's Reach
Co-sleeper. Now if a company wants to make money selling product, why not make
these?

If the mother is sedated, then the baby is at risk if it is in bed with her.
An option here might be to have the dad or grandmother do s2s with the baby
until the mother has recovered from anesthesia.

warmly,
