Hi All,
I, too, have always wondered why there is little or no mention of BF as
preventative action against breast cancer. I don't understand why no one
has done a study on this as it seems such a good case to BF. The info
that I have seen says something to the effect of "some say BF reduces the
risk of breast cancer but there is no information to back it up so don't
believe it. BF is fine but won't do anything to help you where cancer is
concerned."

My theory of why it reduces the risk of breast cancer:

My educated guess is that when women BF they use the breast and ductal
system for what is what designed for. Bottom line: Use or it Lose it. How
many times have we heard that one? The higher rates in Breast cancer over
the past couple generations seem to suggest just that...most moms during
the past 40+ yrs did NOT BF - (most likely) went through the whole
engorgement stage (which we all know can cause damage to the ductal system)
and never even gave BF a try - even for a few days. Some BF for maybe a few
weeks or months (if the baby was lucky!) before switching over to ABM. The
babies who were not BF were ABM fed - we all know what those risks include.
Add the lack of BF for the babies and then they themselves not BF their
babies and then those babies not BF their babies...well you get the picture.
Several generations of humans who are growing more and more suseptible to
breast cancer (and other cancers) specifically because of the lack of BF.
Our immune systems are weak due to generations of not being supported and
strengthened by BF. I believe that we have been compromising our species in
a horrible way. It will take several generations to correct the damage that
we have done, sad to say.

Just my thoughts...

Jaye
whose exclusively BF son (4.5 yrs!) has been drawing me picture after
picture of hearts, his hand and me with my birthday cake (and only 3
candles!). The last picture he gave me was full of 'X's 'O's and hearts -
it was a Love Card. :) Kids are great!
