To Valerie and all,
I just wanted to clarify that our policy at the Mothers' Milk Bank at
Austin is not to accept any donations from formula manufacturers (nor do
we dispense any milk for formula company research). The contribution
from Dannon listed on our website consisted of a $100 contribution from
an employee matching gift program. We were unaware that Dannon is part
of a group that makes formula in Europe; a look at their US website does
not list formula as one of their products. Thanks, Valerie, for
pointing out that they are part of a group that makes formula.

On a brighter note, we feel positive about milk banking making a
comeback. Though there are currently only 5 milk banks in the US and 1
in Canada, we are working with several groups of individuals who are in
the process of starting milk banks in their communities. We feel
strongly about supporting those who are starting milk banks and about
sharing information on how it can be done.

Our growth is proof that there is plenty of supply and demand for donor
milk: since 1999 when we opened, we have gone from pasteurizing about
10,000 ounces to close to 130,000 ounces in 2003! Unfortunately we turn
down donors every week who live too far away but who have hundreds of
ounces of milk they would like to donate. If only their communities had
milk banks.

If anyone has a serious interest in starting a milk bank then please
feel free to contact us. Just so you know, we are not hospital based,
but are an independent non-profit organization that follows the HMBANA
guidelines.
