Study: Reducing Unnecessary C-Sections Would Save Billions.
The Hill (1/8, Viebeck) reports in its "Healthwatch" blog that the "United States could save billions of dollars on maternity and newborn care if pregnant women cut down on unnecessary cesarean sections, according to new research." The study by Truven Health Analytics "found that C-sections cost 50 percent more than vaginal births, with private insurers paying an average of $27,866 for a C-section in 2010 compared with $18,329 for a natural delivery" Suzanne Delbanco of Catalyst for Payment Reform, a nonprofit employer coalition, said in a statement, "We need to pay physicians and hospitals in ways that reward them for eliminating early elective deliveries, reducing unnecessary C-sections and preventing complications of childbirth."
