This subject may be "worn out", but it may be of note that over the many years I have been an LC, I have noticed that many of the moms who come from cultures where breastfeeding is more the norm than ours,  seem to naturally "hook" the baby's chin  with their index finger during or immediately after latching the baby on. 

I often will press rhythmically  on the baby's chin during sucking especially if the mom is complaining of nipple soreness. It's fairly easy to achieve a wider open mouth and the moms usually report immediate pain relief. The baby doesn't seem to mind a bit if you release the pressure at the "pause point". I than teach the mom to do it with the side of her index finger if needed.
