Hi Susie,

I held a presentation little over a week ago and will repeat it another two
times.
I saw the other postings (from Teresa and Helen) and they already mention a
couple of names.
You can draw extensively from the work of John Bowlby, Sue Gerhardt, Ashley
Montagu, Margot Sunderland, Nils Bergman, Marshall Klaus and Desmond Morris
(anyone already bought his new book 'Baby'?! gorgeous!), Meredith Small and
Katherine Dettwyler.
My presentation was about brain development and how an infant is
anatomically unable to do what crying it out expects him to: self
regulation.
Quote those who have written about brain development and attachment, and
there is not much more to say.
You don't need to defend a view or a meaning; it's all in there, pure
anatomy, with a child mainly reacting from his reptilian brain and maybe a
bit from the limbic system, but most certainly not from the neocortex.
Co-regulation is the word here, through extero-gestation, with s2s and bf
being essential elements. Fascinating material.
Once you have read these books, you will feel strong and in no need to
defend yourself. These aspects are part of our work, according to the Scope
of Practice, so they will richly enhance your practice.
Good luck, with finding time to read and read and read and get absorbed and
touched and moved, by all of these miraculous pieces of writing...! ;o)

Warmly,

Marianne Vanderveen IBCLC, Netherlands (and still devoting much of her time
to trying to convince the government of their erring in implementing the
stupid guideline...)

Subject: [LACTNET] research on harmful effects of sleep training?

Hi Everyone,
I am hoping someone can help me find research on the harmful effects of
sleep training, both on breastfeeding as well as on the emotional
development
of the child. I recently attended a lecture on sleep training for our
community
health workers, in which the presenter gave a great deal of misinformation
on
breastfeeding. I have been asked to correct the breastfeeding information
for
the benefit of those who attended this presentation, but I would also like
to
give some research based info on why attatchment parenting is a better
choice than sleep training (the "cry it out method").

Warmly,
Susie McCulloch, LLLL IBCLC
