Diane states:
"Why is it inappropriate for a hospital to give information when a
mother
says she's decided to increase her baby's morbidity and mortality
risks
because her baby has hiccups?

I know it's old ground, but what about working on a release form
laying out
the risks? *Just the ones in the AAP policy statement.* Why is
that such a
hard step for a hospital to take? The AAP has already taken it in
publishing its statement. Heck, maybe just copy a few key parts of
it word
for word and have parents sign that they've read it. Would a health

facility truly balk at such a move? With what justification? How
could an
ethics committee say no?"

In my experience they don't simply because the notion of
breast/bottle being a lifestyle choice only, bottle as norm, and
concern over "causing guilt" is so firmly engrained that the
blinders, eye patches and earplugs that keep them from
hearing/seeing anything else have become permanent fixtures! Even
citing research doesn't budge them. You find yourself playing the
"my research can whip your research" game. It does no good to try
to point out problems with the research they are citing or that they
have misinterpreted the findings. This has been one of the primary
reasons I am now within my last month at this job. My last work day
before I retire will be 2/20/04. Also, when so many AAP members
don't really believe/follow their association's position statement,
it make it extremely difficult to get others to take it seriously!

Winnie-not liking this cynical attitude I am developing!
