Dear Linda,

Please don't try to second guess your care plan. One of the hardest things
we do is try to figure out what will work with each mother. Sometimes what we
percieve as a surmountable barrier can be insurmountable to the mother. And
when we have healthcare providers undermining the mother's motivation and our
own competant care plan, we need to lay the blame for failure where it belongs.
NOt at our own feet but at the feet of a medical system that fails to train
our providers and fails to keep our providers informed of current standards of
practice in terms of lactation. (I am continually frustrated by the care
given mothers I come in contact with. For example, yesturday a mother of a 5 day
old who was told to pump and dump for 7 days of CIPRO for a UTI plus 4 days
posts therapy. I can only wonder how long it will be before grossly incompetent
care will become a rarity.) If there is anything you could do differently in
the future, it is to call the MD and inform him/her of the infant's progress
and your care plan to ensure he or she also "BUYS" into it. Warmly, Chris
