I've been reading the thread "Breastfeeding is Love" with
interest. Just had another patient where S2S worked wonders
before I saw patient.Infant 4 days old would not latch @ all,saw
LC's in hospital.I couldn't see pt. yesterday, she was seeing MD
and in home care in US in my part of country, insurance won't
pay for MD and LC visit in same day. I described assymetrical
latch, and S2S over the phone and today infant was already
Breastfeeding beautifully and content and transfered 84 ML @
breast! I did transfer weight as infant had lost a lot of weight
and MD was concerned. I've been wondering if telling patients
what Nils Bergman has found, that S2S and the act of
Breastfeeding lowers an infant's Cortisol level. Telling parents
that lower stress hormone levels certainly are beneficial to the
infant and who knows how that will affect the infant in later life.
There are advertisements that link lower corisol levels with
being thinner and having less abdomenal body fat. Now I
certainly don't think that is critically important, but cortisol is in
the news. What do you think?
The US Department of Agriculture ,Food and Nutrition
Service has a video Oct 2002 and booklets titled "Fathers
Supporting Breastfeeding" The materials are free.
I loved Debbie Tobin's idea about AD's by Pierce Bronson.
Also liked idea of teaching comfortable position so body will
remember, I see a fair am't of moms who have no trouble
latching on one side but difficulty with the other until we can
figure out a comfortable position for her and her hand. I know
that I learned to type in a high school course. I can't tell you
where each letter is on the keyboard but my fingers know. My
daughter is a physical therapist who works with brain injured
patients. She teaches them to dial their phone repeatedly, they
may not be able to tell you their number but can dial the
number. Chris Erland RN IBCLC
