Just because someone is a mother is not an excuse to engage in unethical business practices. Any business owner larger or small should be aware of state laws. Kickbacks are nothing new and business owners should be aware that kickbacks are unethical. At least one of the perpetrators of the kickbacks was a licensed social worker (which in New York State is the degree needed to be a psychotherapist). Psychotherapists are very well aware that you are not allowed to request or accept kickbacks for referrals. Woman and mothers are just as capable as men and nonparents. I see no reason why we should hold mothers to a lower standard of ethics. ALL of those who complained to me about this practice were also mothers and small business owners.

Sincerely,

Susan E. Burger, MHS, PhD, IBCLC
