The mother of the 9 mo. old needs to have the information that most pregnant
mothers have significantly decreased milk supplies, and that milk (being
more calorie dense thatn most weaning foods) remains the mainstay of the
diet of the child under 12 months. I think there is widespread ignorance
about the issues related to complementary feeding. Rice cereal is such a
poor food to rely on for nutrition during the vulnerable 6-11 month stage.
The Linkages Project http://www.linkagesproject.org has good material on
complementary feeding. Some strategies to improving the child's nutrition
might include chosing more calorie-dense, energy dense solids and
combinations of solids (probably better from the table than from a jar),
frequent small feeds, and using her own milk (if available) to add to help
puree the solids she offers.
