Please see below my message sent to CBS 2 KCAL. We all need to join together in remonstrating in a professional and rational manner to stop this kind of negative media for breastfeeding.

To Whom It May Concern:
I am disheartened to see your headline of November 12th referencing the death of an infant. Your dramatic statement of baby dies while breastfeeding renders a negative connotation to the act of breastfeeding. In fact, this baby did not die because it was breastfeeding. It died because of an irresponsible mother who chose to care for her infant in an intoxicated state. Had the woman caused a death by drinking and driving, that is what your headline would have indicated.
Breastfeeding an infant, in a sober and responsible manner, is one of the most caring, loving acts a mother can perform. Not only does it improve the likelihood of better health and brain development. Breastfeeding decreases the chance that child abuse will occur. You will notice that I stated decreases, not eliminates.
I would hope that in the course of responsible journalism, you would present breastfeeding in a positive light, as opposed to the negative manner you actually used. Perhaps you could print some of the pro-breastfeeding letters that you will receive as a result of your headline. Or even, perhaps, you will present an article that details the fact that this child died as a result of an inebriated, irresponsible parent, not because of breastfeeding, or an article referencing the scientific research that demonstrates the many benefits of breastfeeding. Above all, I hope you will think twice before using inflammatory headlines that are misleading and damaging to a noble act of love.
Sincerely,
Janet Brown, RNC, IBCLC

Let's present breastfeeding in a positive light.

If this doesn't prove that the mainstream media has a sick vendetta
against breastfeeding, I don't know what would. That is disgusting.
