It generally takes 2 ounces of milk a day (above metabolic needs) to put
one ounce of weight on a baby in a week. So if a baby is gaining 3
ounces a week, and needs to gain 5, we would give 4 ounces of extra milk
a day. Another "formula" for milk needs is 2-2.5 oz per pound of body
weight per day, but this is only accurate in the early weeks. By 6
weeks of age, breastfed babies are up to "peak" intake of around 20-26
ounces a day, though some grow and thrive on significantly less.
