Linda:

I know of no new data other than what I published in my 96 edition on
venlafaxine(Effexor). Most of us in this business are now recommending Zoloft
rather than the other antidepressants. At least we have one paper suggesting
that the neonates' plasma levels were undetectible. I would not recommend
Prozac at all, too many reported side effects in infants.

Newest paper out on antidepressants in breastfeeding is :

Wisner KL, Perel JM et.al. : Antidepressant therapy during breast-feeding.
Am. j. Psychiatry 153(9): 1132, 1996

Subject: Dr. Hale more med info on Effexor

Dr. Hale,
One of our very breastfeeding griendly Drs. wanted to know if there was any
more information about effexor, a new SSRI antidepressent available. I will
be talking to him soon. I will relate the usual advice for new drugs which
is go to one that we know more about. I will also give the caution on
antidepressents in general, watching baby, etc.

TIA
