I was impressed by that doctor's matter-of-fact handling of the
situation -
he really made it seem as though it was the baby's decision, and the
mother
was awash in that just-given-birth glow so she was ready to accept her
baby
a the breast. I sometimes wish more doctors and nurses would do this. I
guess some mothers would react negatively but I'll bet that many would
find
it "clicks" and feels right once they start.

When I teach about birth interventions like pain meds, inductions etc.
I always tell people to take in as much info as they can, but not to
make any decisions ahead of time since they have no way to know how
their labor will proceed and what interventions they will or won't want
to need at the time.
I guess you could use the same approach to bfing. Don't make a decision
till the baby's born. You never know. People can't imagine the wash of
emotion that happens after the birth, it's not possible to describe, so
we can just say, Wait, see how it goes. Then there needs to be someone
in the delivery room like the doc in Teresa's situation who will just
let it happen.
