In our program (Berkshire Nursing Families) where I work under an IBCLC
mentor, we give free hospital support, home support, phone support, support
groups and recently email support. Email enables me to be able to reach
many clients that I would not otherwise be able to reach. It is a way to
check in to see if everything is going well and it gives me an opportunity
to share times when growth spurts are expected, milk supply maintenance,
normal growth info, some websites, and support group info, etc. Should an
issue arise they will email me and I will attempt to answer the question via
email but many times it is necessary for a face-to-face consult and that is
suggested (I will also call to get more specifics if there is an issue). We
find that email has enhanced our services and made it more efficient to
reach more people. That being said, I think the reason it works well for
our program is that we are seeing many of these moms in childbirth classes
and then in the hospital...we have an established relationship...they have a
face they can connect to the emails.

Thanks for letting this IBCLC hopeful share (taking the test in July 2009!),
