Maureen rang me after sending off her message - and was disappointed to hear
that we had discussed neuropathic pain already on lactnet. I don't remember
when it was, but remember having private emails from people after discussing
chronic pain syndromes. I have suggested low-dose amitriptiline to women
with chronic pain, but very few want to take it.
We have included a discussion of this (with references) in the revised
version of the Lactation Consultant Series Unit "Candidiasis and
Breastfeeding" (Issue 5 of Series Two) - which should be at the printers
this week!
However, although I agree with Maureen that sometimes breast pain may be due
to nerve damage / changes, my view is that not all radiating pain is related
to nipple damage. Sometimes, women develop symptoms of breast thrush after
their infant has been on antibiotics (for example) - and there has been no
nipple damage. I imagine candida can make its way into ducts, despite the
antifungal properties of breast milk, and this can cause this radiating
pain.
