Kirsten,
I believe that anyone working in the health care field must have protocols.
Those protocols should be backed by evidence-based science/research. The lab
technician must prove to you that what she is doing is based on a standard
protocol. If the department does not have a protocol that states that all babies
who need blood drawn must be made to cry in order that the blood flow faster
and the research to back it up, then it is obvious that this technician is not
working within the standards of evidence-based practice. The burden of proof
does not lie at your feet but with the person whose actions or non-action
effects the patient/client.
Valerie W. McClain, IBCLC
