Dear Wise Ones,

I have been contacted by a physician for some guidance in helping a
mother hoping to adopt within the year. She would like very much to
breastfeed if possible. The situation is that she has no ovaries and
has had a comp;ete hysterectomy, thus isnot producing any estrogen or
progesterone on her own. She takes some estrogen replacement therapy.

The physician's questions, which I cannot answer, are:

1) what levels of estrogen and progesterone would be appropriate for
giving mother to help enhance her possibility to lactate?

2) how can she help increase the mother's prolactin?

I was able to educate the physician on supplemental feeding equipment,
how to help the mother identify whether her goal was the breastmilk or
the nurturing at the breast, etc. I did ask her permission to seek
answers on the technical issues of hormone therapy and dosages on this
list, since there are several who post who have experience with adoptive
nursing.

Any and all information will be greatly appreciated.

Warmly,

Cindy Garrison BS IBCLC
working as an LC in a Pittsburgh womens hospital
