GOod morning,
Yesterday I worked with a mom who is bf her second child after not being
successful with the first one. She knows why the first child got off the
path, she bottle fed her, because her ped said the baby needed extra fluid.
The baby was bf well, lots of milk spilling all over the mother and baby
when he bf'd in the office here. She reports many more than minimum wet and
poopy diapers. But the baby was yellow. I had to call the peds. office and
send her there. I knew also that the ped would plead with her again, as he
has only suggested up to now in this 5d old's life to feed formula. She has
resisted. I supported her in the resistance, naturally. Especially, since
all points to the bf going extremely well. I taught her how to finger feed
the baby in case she was going to have to supplement the already great
supply of breast milk. She went to rent a pump before going to the peds.
office so she could supplement with her own breast milk.
I called her for an update last night. The baby's bili was 20. The
doctor plead with her to feed formula, since formula has a protein in it
that binds with bili and pulls it out faster.
I tell you, is there no end to the formula companies plots to convince the
mothers? and doctors sabatoging? I think she is resisting still, but sure
puts her on the 'hot' seat of decision. I gave her complete freedom to make
her choice, except that my response was that formula wouldn't do this better
that the lovely milk that she is feeding from her own breasts and that she
is pumping.
