In the USA, we have CMS and JCAHO looking over our shoulders. Once when we
had a mock JCAHO inspection in prep for the real one, the first thing the
examiner did when she approached the NICU was check the dates on the RTF.
Sho'nuff! It was expired. One ding against the hospital. Since then, I
check them periodically myself, especially before known inspections. But
there are occasional surprise inspections. First concern is our babies.
Second concern is the hospital. There is one RN who wants the expired
formula for his small farm animals. I rather enjoy opening each one and
pouring it down the drain! When I find them, there are more in the Level II
/ ECU on their shelves and in their discharge bags, than in the Level III /
NICU.
