I don't know that I have seen all of the posts regarding baby O- I don't
know of other symptoms besides weight loss and a diaper rash. However,
in cases where it seems that the baby has significant intolerance
symptoms to breastmilk, particularly weight loss, I would suggest an
allergy evaluation for skin testing. I have had some babies in my
practice with the same story who are profoundly allergic to many foods.
BTW, diaper rashes that appear to be a burn around the rectal area in
nursing babies are typically due to citric acid in mom's diet, such as
citrus fruits, citrus juices, tomatoes, and foods with citric acid such
as candy and soda. IT can also be due to the infant's poor food
absorption, causing diarrhea and acidic stools.
I would also suggest a urinalysis for organic acids, and a blood test
for amino acid levels to help rule out a metabolic syndrome, given
weight loss at this age. This would be especially important if there is
developmental delay.
If the baby is having bloody stools, please see the new Academy of
Breastfeeding Medicine protocol on allergic proctocolitis, www.bfmed.org.
