Meshing with Morgan's incredible free lesson in how to do an effective
presentation (what a list this is!!) let me remind you that we can talk
about the PURPOSE of breastfeeding - namely, meeting the baby's immediate
and ongoing needs for food, warmth, contact, development of disease immunity
so they can use the nourishment they get for growth rather than for fighting
infection, hormones with which to make use of the food, oral motor
development that facilitates later speech, etc etc etc.

All this can be said without once using the word 'advantage of
breastfeeding' or 'risk of formula feeding'. You can still convey the extra
work required to give the baby all the things breastfeeding provides if
breastmilk substitutes are used instead of breastfeeding, and you can
emphasize that breastmilk substitutes provide food only. The warmth and
contact must be provided more consciously, and the immune support doesn't
happen.
Talking about the 'increased vulnerability' of babies who are fed on
breastmilk substitutes seems to be less inflammatory than saying these
babies are at risk.

If you do find yourself mentioning the advantages of breastfeeding, don't
sweat it. It's true too.

Happy not to be facing an audience that works in a setting where more than
five of six women end up feeding the hard way
