Karen I would agree with Kellie, check for possible oversupply
issues. Is the baby fussy, gulping ,coughing ,arching @ the
breast, spitting up, or having frothy or bloody stools? If not and
he had been checked and no apparent physical problems are
found, I wouldn't worry. My son was born @ 36 weeks, poor
sleepy feeder ist week with considerable weight loss. Week 2 he
weighed 5lb 11 oz. Week 4- 9lb. 15 oz. He continued to gain 2-
3 lbs a month. He took 5 minutes to feed every 2 hours like
clockwork, self waking. He was the happiest baby, never spit
up. He was exclusively breastfed until 8 or so months, wanted
no part of food. HE was really fat, @ about 9 months his gain
slowed, @ one year he was 3 years and 3 pounds less than his
sister. My husband and I were not overweight @ all @ that
time. When he started to walk @ 1year, he started to slim
down , by 18 months he was no longer a fat baby and has
never been overweight since and he is 31 years old. The
pediatrician had said to me could you slow down his intake a
little? I decided to do nothing as some of my relatives had
similar babies, though not quite as big as mine, and they
slimmed to normal weight as toddlers. We all have had
abundant supplies, besides I didn't know how to slow down a
baby who only fed 5 minutes. I certainly believe in watching
carefully for problems, but this taught me to trust my body and
not to try to fix what isn't broken with patients. Chris Erland RN
