For those of you who haven't seen the original study conducted in Durban by Coutsoudis and colleagues, the reference is:

Coutsoudis A, Pillay K, Spooner E, et al. Influence of infant-feeding patterns on early mother-to-child transmission of HIV-1 in Durban, South Africa: a prospective cohort study. Lancet 1999;354(9177):471-476.

As it's in the Lancet, it should be easily accessible in medical libraries. I know of no other study where the feeding groups are so carefully defined and kept from overlapping. Let us hope that others will follow-up with similar, well-defined studies, where "exclusive breastfeeding" really *is* exclusive.
