It is all part of the whole and you're right, it did begin a long time ago.
There is the male/female thing; science versus mother nature(and we know a
male scientist can do it better than mother nature :-) There was a time
when babies were pretty much left up to the women to care for and feed.
Then science entered and men thought they could do it better. Women fell
for it in spite of their better instincts, which leads us to the situation
we have today with ABM being the norm (I don't mind using ABM for formula -
kind of appropriate, don't you think?).

Some women have always been strong enough to go against the flow and I
think the women's movement has empowered many more. But we are dealing
with something that is deeply ingrained and it manages to obliterate a
woman's innate desire to feed her baby. The whole package is so complex
and interrelated. It's not just "BF and everything will be wonderful
again." It is also attitudes about value of work, need for $,
inconvenience, time, our bodies, parent's rights, baby's needs and a lot
more I can't think of right now :-)

Modern formula companies have just taken it to new heights with the science
of selling. And they take advantage of every nuance and capitalize on it.
Sincerely, Pat in SNJ
