One of the most frustrating type of clients I have is babies with high
palates. I usually don't get them referred until 4-8 weeks old with mom's
supply diminishing baby's weight dropping. But one or two success stories
are in order. A mom recently called whom I had seen many months ago. Seems
when I told her the baby was not doing well due to sloppy suck and her supply
falling off, she was very angry. Decided to follow through with suggestions
after a few days of anger. It was her third baby, the first to have a
problem. She pumped and used a Haberman regularly for 3-4 months. Gradually
baby started to nurse a little better. By six months baby was nursing
correctly. Mom still pumping for convenience using Haberman exclusively for
away bottles. By 10 months baby absolutely refused all bottles including
Haberman. Mom called for permission to quit pumping! Which I said
ABSOLUTELY stop. So delighted. Baby is healthy, mom extremely grateful
and is now in the support network for other moms.
Another mom I am dealing with is doing lots of pumping and using Haberman.
These moms often complain of a baby who gags if you try to get the nipple
far into the mouth. I found if they use the Haberman (which they will do
much longer than using SNS or finger-feeding) baby can become used to opening
wider and accepting more of mom's nipple, then goes to breast OK. Also see
a lot of these same babies with reflux, projectile vomiting etc. Wonder how
much is due to dairy, how much to baby becoming used to taking small amounts
at the breast and refusing larger volumes. Have had them vomiting with SNS,
Haberman, etc. Eliminating dairy from mom's diet has stopped this process in
babies getting just EBM or breast.
