Dear LactNet subscribers:

I hope you can direct us or assist our hospital with this project. In doing our Lactation Statistics, following the guidelines of the PC-05 Joint Commission measure, we are woefully concerned with our numbers. One of the Lactation Team Members had an idea of stocking the OB/GYN office exam rooms with breastfeeding literature. She wanted to stock the exam rooms since a lot of practices have televisions tuned to popular shows in their waiting rooms that distract waiting pregnant mothers from any literature placed there. Do you know of any free literature resources that we could order from? I have already contacted our State Breastfeeding Coalition, our State Maternal Child Health Dept and local breastfeeding coalition to see if they had any resources we could tap into.

One thing that I was particularly disturbed with recently happened at my personal OB/GYN office. My daughter is expecting her 1st baby. Last month, I accompanied her to her 1st OB appointment with the nurse midwife. Prior to this appointment, they provided her with paperwork to fill out. On the very 1st page of the packet, there was an information card from a formula company to fill out to receive free baby stuff. Since she will be breastfeeding, she did not fill out the card & threw it away. When she signed in at the front desk, she handed the receptionist the packet of information that she had filled out. The receptionist asked her where the formula card was & she stated that she was planning to breastfeed & didn't want it. The receptionist pressured her by asking, "Are you sure you don't want to just fill it out? They send you lots of free stuff." She replied, "No." I was really offended at this practice, especially with a OB/GYN group that I thought was breastfeeding friendly. I mentioned this to the nurse midwife once we were called in the back and she expressed her disgust with this practice as well. If this is the standard practice at this office, I am sure it is the same, if not worse at others. I am already planning to write a personal letter to this office expressing my disgust and concerns.

Sincerely,

Mindy Glenn, RN, CLC, CPST, LLLL
