Thank You Heidi for clarifying, I was trying to say that in an earlier post but it didn't come out right.

WIC does amazing work and a lot of work to promote and support breastfeeding. Prenatal education, peer counselor support before and after delivery, free manual pumps and free loaning of electric pumps. Many states have IBCLCs on staff in their WIC programs.

We all wish all WIC moms would breastfeed, but reality is at this put they are not. So yes, WIC offers formula. WIC doesn't buy the formula. The mother purchases the formula at a store with a check/voucher/coupon. WIC then pays the retail store, the retail price for the formula and other foods purchased with the voucher. The formula manufacturer gives a portion back to WIC to reduce the total cost on the WIC program. This is true for other foods too.

We should be supporting the WIC Program for all the work it does with low income families to promote and support breastfeeding, not cutting it down.

Lissa, IBCLC in WIC
