"The funny thing about all this is that my husband and I both have a knee-jerk negative response to the term "marketing". It is sort of that nausea thing that was recently described with the bf mom who became pregnant. I can't tell you why, but we have this negative image of what marketing and marketing experts are about."

There are two ways to look at marketimg, IMO. One approach involves creating a need for a product or service where there was none (like cigarettes or AIM, fake breakfast cereal, 40 pairs of shoes, etc). In other words, the product or service and its perceived "need" would not exist independant of the marketing. Another involves responding to the needs that already do exist (LC's, for example). I think creating the perception of need is the stereotype most people have. Anyone who promotes anything (for money or not is marketing). Since most of us do it anyway, we might as well learn to do it well.
