Rachel,
Babies are put on protocol for many reasons, IUGR, late preterm, LGA (big babies), mom is diabetic,a cold baby, if there are symptoms, etc. All babies are NOT routinely checked for blood sugar. Thank goodness! Years ago a C/Section baby was on protocol but that changed a long while ago.
We just have some nurses misunderstanding the protocol and overusing it at times. Something we are working on.
