I know it's a matter of terms, but....

My Mosby definition of mastitis is, "[mastos, breast, itis, inflammation] an inflammatory condition of the breast..."  So, mastitis is ALWAYS treated in part with cold, in my book to help relieve the inflammation.

I don't think I've ever treated a "breast infection" without swelling.  There always seems to be a lump or swollen area.  Maybe if there isn't and swelling, the moms have felt good enough to treat themselves without calling an LC?  Anyone else remembers many cases of a  breast infection that has only redness, fever, malaise, or pain and no swelling?
