Hi Everyone:

I've just recently returned to Lactnet & this marks my return from lurkdom over the past month or so. I formerly worked in direct patient care in Pediatrics & Neonatal NICU. I had to make a major change in my career path due to personal health issues a few years ago. Now, I work in managed care in utilization review/discharge planning following NICU babies from the opposite end of care pathway.

Recently I had to fly myself & looked up the guidelines on fluids, gels, etc., in hopes of getting through TSA checkpoints as easily as possible. For anyone flying & for anyone with clients with questions here is a website with the guidlines from TSA:
http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/children/formula.shtm

The airlines themselves also frequently give helpful information on what is allowed.

Breastmilk, as well as other items related to infant & children's nutrition are not subject to the same 3 oz limits/1quart plastic bag packaging as other personal liquids & gels. It does need to be declared to the TSA personnel at the checkpoint prior to screening. They are no longer making parents go through the ritual taste test either.

I was pleased to get to sit next to a mom & 4 mo old baby girl on one leg of my flight. I even switched to the middle seat so a man wouldn't be sitting next to them (big strain on my part--not!). I don't get near enough time with new moms & babies these days. The little one fussed prior to take off until her mom went ahead & fed her. Baby nursed quietly through take off & landing; and, I told the mom that even if she hadn't there wasn't anything that baby could have done to upset me.
