Barbara Wilson-Clay,
Check what Ruth Lawrence writes about repeat mastitis.
I have seen several women lately with inadequately treated combination bacterial and yeast mastitis. It may be necessary for her to be treated simultaneously and systemically with oral antibiotics and oral antifungals. If there is low supply due to the infection and probable infant oral thrush-these can explain a fussy baby.

I would agree that having the milk cultured would be appropriate, but am not sure why the baby should not nurse. The baby has already been exposed to possibly high levels of infective material as well as the protective antibodies. To remove the baby from the breast means that she will have to deal with the infection without the antibodies that she would recieve from continuing to feed.
