Hi, All: Just wanted to add my 2 cents worth. It's taken me a few years,
but I was finally able to get 2nd Skin (an aqueous burn dressing) off our
unit for sore nipples. Two occurences were the incentive I needed to
change our practice. Nowhere on the box does it state that this product
could be used for nipples. A mom told me after I questioned her why there
was a box of 2nd skin at her bedside (she had just told me nursing was
going well for her) that she thought it was for use on her perineum!
Several other mothers have shown me clear bead-like gel in and around their
babies' mouths after nursing while using 2nd skin. Because the dressing is
rectangular in size, moms were being told to cut the dressing in half - 2
nipples covered for the price of one dressing! The gel was then oozing out
and was still present on the nipple (obviously unbeknownst to mom!) when
baby was put to breast. Not sure if this would have any negative affects
on the baby, but sure didn't want to take the chance when this product was
not being used for its stated purpose. We have since switched to
Hollister's comfort gels and I've have several moms who have experience
with 2nd skin also tell me that the comfort gels are much more comfortable
and soothing. (No financial interest in either of these products - just
trying to find the best products for my mothers!)
