The mortality rate amongst wet nursed babies in France in the 19th century
was quite high. The reason was that there were wet nurses who were not very
scrupulous, and would take many babies to nurse. The wet nurse would have 6,
7, 10 babies from various families, and, of course, could not nurse them
all, or perhaps she would nurse none at all. And many died. It's not the
fault of "old breastmilk", it's the fault of a bizarre social system and
poverty and greed.
