Hi Jamie,

I'm catching up on my Lactnet posts but wanted to add something that I found
during the info search I conducted on the topic about a year ago for a
client of mine. My client had GB surgery about three years before
conceiving so it is a little different, but this mom did have
problems with breastfeeding. Although the mom seemed to produce plenty of
milk and her baby fed frequently, she wasn't gaining as fast as she should.

I did some research and, along with their increased need for protein (at
least 3x as much as the average person) and B12, there is also a chance of
zinc deficiency in mom that can cause low milk supply. Just another thing
to watch if this mom does decide to take the plunge before weaning.

The info I gathered was off of Lactnet and the zinc deficiency was a
Lactnetter's personal experience. Another Lactnetter pointed out that
medications such as Domperidone and Metoclopramide are unsafe for post-GB
patients because they speed transit -- definitely an undesirable effect.

Nikki Lee posted these studies for further info (might sway the mom to
wait):

      1) Pedatrics 86(5):777-778; 1990. ( Failure of a nursing infant
to hrive after the mother's gastric bypass for morbid obesity)

2)Pediatric Hemtal.Oncol.11(3):311-8; 1994 (Nutritional Vit B-12
deficiency in a breastfed infant following maternal gastric bypass
