Hi all and thanks for all the info on the Jaundice and pumping in Paris. :)

Mom will be pumping with a hand pump or PNS (if she can get a battery pack)
on the airplane. She will be lowering her supply just before travel to aid
in her comfort.

We have talked about hand expression - she isn't interested. We have talked
about the milk - she will be tossing rather than storing. I have had to
keep my personal feelings VERY mellow about this whole situation and simply
supporting the mother where she is while gently exploring options. She
isn't happy to be traveling without baby but is stuck in a situation she
isn't sure how to handle. While she is excited about going to Paris with
her husband for this business trip, she is upset that she will be separated
from baby. The option of staying home wasn't taken well by others. The
compromise was to shorten the time gone from 9 days to 5. It just isn't a
good situation all around - each way you turn, someone loses...

Re: my jaundice question. I don't know about blood incompatibility - I'll
look into that. The baby in question was born at 42 wks 3 yrs ago. Mom was
induced with cervadil, pitocin - 39 hours of labor later a C-Sec was
performed. They thought mom had a uterine infection and put her on
antibiotics as was baby. Baby was put under phototherapy by 15 hours for
bili level of 15. Mom was never able to breastfeed due to extreme pain and
nipple damage from baby. Looking at baby pics I saw some significant
molding of the head and asymmetry of the jaws and face as well as
torticollis. NONE of this was ever worked on nor mentioned by a local LC
who is no longer in practice. This was one of those where the LC says the
latch looks great but it hurt like hell. Also, mom was never properly
evaluated with her pumping - flanges were too small and her nipples were
even further traumatized. Mom spent 3 months pumping in pain and finally
gave up. Can't say as I blame her.

We won't be dealing with any of that nonsense this time around. My biggest
concerns for her are: The early onset jaundice issue and getting baby to
breast successfully. Well, that and I am developing a sore throat and
congestion and am supposed to be with her at the hospital this Friday when
her new baby is to be delivered by planned c-sec due to breech presentation.
I keep praying that baby will turn herself around and take matters into her
own hands...

Thanks again...!

Subject: pumping while traveling

Jaye asks for help finding a rental pump for a US client who will be staying
in a hotel in Paris.
Has she figured out how she will clean her pump in between uses, and how she
will store any milk she wants to take home? I would think it would be worth
it to have a crash course in hand expression, rather than getting a machine
that has to be dismantled and cleaned between each use.
It takes the better part of 24 hours to get from California to Europe. What
are her plans for expressing milk on the flights she is taking? Surely she
won't be pumping en route?
