Dear Lactnetters,

a mother asked me to post her problem to Lactnet as no one around her has heard anything similar to her problem.
She has a 9 months old son, who recently started to refuse solids. He seems to be teething, so this might be the reason for his only wanting to nurse. This happened also 3 weeks ago, and the baby then lost 250 grs (about half a pound) in 4 days. He gained it back in 5 days as soon as he returned to solids, but altogether he hasn't gained weight in a month.
But now he is losing weight again on sole breastmilk. Wet diapers are OK, the baby is happy and alert except not gaining. He also started to nurse at night again.
When he accepts solids, he eats about 600 grs/day.
Now the mother nurses him very frequently (in every two hours) and does breast compression.
Otherwise the baby is slim: 76 cms and 7.5 kgs.
The mother is really concerned and their doctor threatens them with admitting the baby to hospital.
What else could the mother do to prevent further weight loss? And what do you think how much weight loss can be tolerated and proclaimed to be "normal"?

Thank you very much for your help!

Eszter from Hungary
