I have a math question about the method I use to calculate stats at my
hospital. I work part time so I do not see every breastfeeding mother, but I do
have access to the numbers that show our initiation rate. Anyway, I will
describe the math I do and if anyone has a diffferent way of doing it please let
me know-you can email me privately. I saw 103 of the 162 breastfeeding
mothers. Of ALL of the moms delivering at our hospital the initiation rate was
73%. I like to record the exclusive breastfeeding rates at discharge, 3 days,
and 3 weeks. I only have data on the moms I work with and I want to
compare to the initiation rate. For example, if I had 79 moms breastfeeding at
discharge which would be:
79/103(moms I saw)= 77%. To compare this number to the 73% initiation rate
I multiplied 77% x 73% to get 56% breastfeeding at discharge.

I hope this all makes sense. Is this okay? Is there a different way to do this?
Our Quality Control Director did not understand how I came up with my
numbers. I explained it to her and she understands now, but she asked how
other hospitals do it. Thanks.
