I, also, tend to suggest placing the tube so it will be under the
breast and above the tongue as baby is nursing.  The primary reason
is that when it is placed above the breast (so it winds up between
the breast and the palate) and you are working on the asymetric
latch, you frequently wind up with the tube going up baby's nose!
It nearly always takes another hand to be sure the tubing goes in
baby's mouth.  With it under the tongue, it easily winds up placed
effectively as the breast and tube both wind up in baby's mouth.  If
I am using a feeding tube either as a one-time supplementer or to
assess whether using a supplementer will help solve the problem, I
can slip it in the side of the baby's mouth as it is firmer tubing,
I find that the softer supplementer tubing just won't slip in easily
so it needs to be there from the start (and you can use the notch to
"turn the flow on or off").
So the selection is based more on practical logistics than one
working better than the other once in place.
