Just gotta share this idiotic (can you tell I'm mad?)dialogue that
occurred between a Harvard educated pediatrician and an LLL mom that
called me with her concerns. She already has a three year old that just
stopped nursing and is nursing her one year old currently. Lots of
experience under her belt and the MD was still able to shake her
confidence!!!! When asked what foods the baby was eating, mom offered
to Dr. that she was still nursing baby not eating an awful lot of other
things. Dr. said to get that baby down to 3 nursings/day immediately.
That the baby was probably anemic and that she could be causing
developmental delays AND INTESTINAL BLEEDING. She proceeded to do a
blood test and reported back to the mom that baby was indeed slightly
anemic (mom forgot to ask for the figure) and she needed to start giving
the baby oatmeal, oatmeal cookies and (get this) CHEESE! No mention of
providing Vit C enriched juices in combo with iron enriched cereals (she
was told not to give cheerios, we commonly recommend this cereal at WIC
due to Fe source and self feeding potential). She called me all upset
because she tries to steer clear of milk products due to ecezema hx and
is completely confused about the advice to give cheese. As far as
cookies are concerned she'd rather not see her one year old become a
sweet freak (overweight Hx), she is completely confused about the
intestinal bleeding and developmental delay bit ("how could this
possibly occur if I've been giving her breastmilk all this time") and
wonders if all of these "enriched" foods can really be better than
breastmilk. She is looking for amunition for her next visit to said
Dr. I TOLD HER TO SWITCH DRS!!!!!!!!! Anyone with comments or
suggestions for this mom?
