The Urban League of Detroit and Southeastern Michigan WIC Program is
hiring!

Positions include:
1- Breastfeeding Peer Counselor
2- Urban League Mother Nurture Project Program Assistant
3- Urban League Mother Nurture Project Research Assistant
4- Competent Professional Authority (CPA)
5- Registered Dietitian (RD)

The Urban League Mother Nurture Project is a grant-funded initiative
focused on breastfeeding promotion on the East Side of Detroit.

*1. Breastfeeding Peer Counselor*
A WIC Breastfeeding Peer Counselor offers support and basic breastfeeding
information to pregnant and breastfeeding WIC mothers and other interested
individuals as assigned.

RESPONSIBILTIES:
Educates and Counsels breastfeeding WIC clients by telephone, home visits,
and/or in the WIC clinic on designated days or by appointment.
Receives a caseload of WIC participants and makes routine periodic contacts
with all clients assigned or referred.
Provides basic breastfeeding information and support to new mothers or
other interested individuals as appropriate, including benefits of
breastfeeding, overcoming common barriers, and how to get a good start
breastfeeding. Helps clients prevent and manage common breastfeeding
concerns or refers to lactation consultant as needed.
Conducts home visits to breastfeeding mothers as needed.
Respects each participant by keeping information strictly confidential and
follows state and local agency policy on confidentiality.
Maintains accurate records of all contacts made with WIC participants and
submits productivity data to supervisor as required.
Refers clients to available resources including.
Attends and assists with prenatal classes and breastfeeding
conferences/workshops as appropriate.
Assists with WIC staff in promoting breastfeeding through special projects
and duties as assigned. Works with other peer counselors as directed by a
supervisor.

EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE:
High school graduate or equivalent. Prefer some college and completion of
“Breastfeeding Basics” training provided by the State of Michigan.Has
working knowledge and/or training in breastfeeding. Is enthusiastic about
breastfeeding and wants to help other mother’s enjoy a positive experience
breastfeeding

*2. Urban League Mother Nurture Project Program Assistant
*The program assistant will work with the Breastfeeding Coordinator Local
Agency following established protocols to plan and manage daily activities
and projects for the Urban League Mother Nurture Project under the guidance
of the WIC Director.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Assists Breastfeeding Coordinator in planning and attending baby showers
and breastfeeding events as scheduled. Performs various clerical duties
including, typing, answering phones, preparing correspondence, and
completing various forms of paperwork. Schedule peer counselors and clients
as needed.
Define short and long term goals for team members to focus efforts.
Assists with daily and weekly events. May complete purchase requisitions
for needed supplies and submit for approval.
Reserves conference rooms in designated buildings for baby showers. Contact
clients and reminds clients of scheduled events.
Estimate the resources and participants needed to achieve project goals.
Obtains, complies, files, and maintains records; follows local agency and
State of Michigan policy on confidentiality.
Plan and schedule project timelines and milestones using appropriate tools.
Track project milestones.
Counsel breastfeeding moms and make referrals when necessary.
Performs other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE:
Associates Degree in Nutrition, Early Childhood, Psychology or related
field. Preferred Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited University. Two years
experience in WIC, CACFP, Education or related filed. Customer
Service/direct client contact required. Ability to speak another language
is a plus. Interest in the health and care of infants and their mother’s is
a plus.

*3. Urban League Mother Nurture Project Research Assistant
*The research assistant will perform research and assist with research
projects, following established protocols.  The research assistant will
also perform various clerical and editorial duties, like compiling,
processing, and analyzing data.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Performs various clerical duties including, typing, answering phones,
preparing correspondence, and completing various forms and paperwork.
Assists with research projects; assists with planning, designing, and
implementing research projects; performs any necessary library research;
interprets and analyzes data.
Attends and participates in meetings, conferences, and training groups.
Compiles, processes, and analyzes data; records research procedures and
results; files and maintains records; codes data for input for electronic
data processing; inputs and retrieves data using computers.
Performs other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION:
Associates Degree in Research or related field.
*4. Compentent Professional Authority (CPA)
*
Provide WIC services and perform certification procedures in accordance
with MDCH WIC Division Policies and Procedures. Perform WIC certification
and recertification provide nutrition education to WIC participants. Refer
high-risk participants to the Registered Dietitian. Make referrals to
supportive health services and other agencies as indicated. Engage in
outreach activity. Answer and screen telephone calls. Maintain WIC files
and required program logs and reports.

RESPONSIBILTIES:
Perform WIC certifications, recertifications, category changes, transfers,
and re-instatements for WIC clients including completion of all forms as
required.
Perform anthropometric measurements and biochemical procedures, assessing
risk status, and assigning and monitoring risk codes to determine
eligibility for WIC benefits.
Provide and document nutrition education to complete the certification and
recertification process as outlined in WIC Policy and Procedure. Refer and
makes appointments for high risk clients to see the WIC Dietitian.
Participate and attend in-service training meetings as scheduled. Attend
monthly agency meetings as scheduled.
Issue benefits and customize food packages to meet client needs following
MI WIC policy.
Approve Class II B formulas following all MI WIC policy steps with
appropriate documentation.
Assist participants as needed in completion of certification and
recertification steps. Refer participants to other programs within the
Detroit Urban League and to outside agencies as indicated. Document
referrals per policy.
Works closely with Program Assistant (PA) to ensure all necessary data is
entered correctly into MI-WIC for certification/recertification .
Maintain nutrition education material inventory in assigned clinic. Order
additional materials as needed. Log nutrition education into MI-WIC system
as required per policy.
Assist Registered Dietitian in the development of a quarterly newsletter or
other projects as assigned.
Answer and screen telephone calls. Provide assistance accordingly and
schedule participant appointments.
Complete all data entry for MI-WIC to assign food packages and issue
benefits for participants.
Maintain EBT card issuance records and reports for MDCH WIC Division as
required.
Disseminate closet formula in accordance to local agency policy. Maintain
closet formula inventory log.
May participate in outreach activities as assigned.
Maintain monthly outreach log and submit to WIC Director.
Arranges for interpreter or special needs for clients as required.
Perform other tasks as assigned in order to meet agency objectives and
deadlines

EDUCATION:
Bachelor’s degree in food/nutrition, dietetics, or home economics with
emphasis in human nutrition.
May be qualified as a Registered Nurse, Registered Dietetic Technician, or
a Certified Physician’s Assistant. One (1) year of WIC experience preferred.

*5. Registered Dietitian
*Performs WIC certification and provides high-risk nutrition counseling and
nutrition education to the WIC participants. Develops and provides
nutrition education materials for individuals and groups. . Oversees job
performances of the CPA (Competent Professional Authority) and the (PA) WIC
Program Assistant. Makes referrals to other disciplines and outside
agencies as indicated.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Provides counseling and develops care plans for WIC high-risk participants
according to MDPH WIC high-risk policy. Documents follow up counseling
using MI-WIC policies and procedures.
Assures that WIC participants are identified as high risk and are referred
to the registered dietitian for nutrition services.
Conducts group nutrition education to WIC participants to fulfill secondary
nutrition education requirements.
Resolves client complaints and problems in the WIC clinic, documents
incidents as necessary and conducts investigations as directed.
Performs WIC certification, recertification, and other WIC related duties
as necessary.
Oversees job performances of the Competent Professional Authority (CPA) and
the WIC Program Assistant (PA). Provides training to WIC staff when
necessary.
Assist in informing all WIC staff of policy/procedure changes as directed
by WIC Coordinator.
Develops nutrition education materials and screens professionally developed
materials for appropriateness and accuracy.
Oversees the maintenance of WIC records and logs.
Makes referrals to other disciplines and outside agencies for clients as
indicated.
Reviews medical justification forms for specialty formula and approves
following local agency and MI-WIC procedures.
Participates in WIC staff meetings and in-services.

EDUCATION:
Bachelor’s degree in Food and Nutrition or Dietetics and Registration as a
dietitian with the American Dietetic Association is required. Such
registration must be maintained throughout employment in this position.
