The AAP has new guidelines regarding hyperbilirubinemia
http://aappolicy.aappublications.org/cgi/content/full/pediatrics;114/1/2
97 It does address breastfeeding as a possible risk factor. we need
to remember in many cases that it is non breastfeeding jaundice that is
more likely to cause problems, re, babies not going to the breast often
enough for varied reasons. New follow up guidleines for bili's and
babies are addressed in these guidelines. Also JCAHO has inlcuded
hyperbilirubinemia
http://www.jcaho.org/about+us/news+letters/sentinel+event+alert/sea_31.h
tm and its recognition, care and treatment as a sentinel event. the
number one rule is to promote and support breastfeeding. We did have a
local neo who read a summary of the report and told some local peds that
he thought it suggested that all breast babies be supplemented, however,
I gave then the complete 27 page guidelines which did not suggest
routine supplementation.
