IUDs are not contra-indicated during lactation, but there is a slightly higher
incidence of uterine perforation in breastfeeding mothers. While there are
always risks of complications associated with these devices, one must also
consider the risks associated with oral contraceptives or Depo P injections,
especially the hormonal effects on the nursling and reduced milk production. I
can certainly sympathize though....allergic reaction to latex and spermacides
and fear of OCs. I opted for an IUD. It took some footwork to find a GYN who
offered them (my HMO did not). I was given a booklet detailing possible risks
and signed informed consent as well as had a lengthy discussion with the
doctor before I got it. She would only insert them in women over age 21,
married, monogamus whom had already given birth. I had no complaints with
mine.
