I've changed my mind on predictions of doom and gloom. If I knew someone
was planning to give birth at a hospital whose policies, procedures or
relationships to formula manufacturers made it unlikely that anyone giving
birth there would be able to fully breastfeed, I would tell the woman of the
very real risk of failure of breastfeeding she was running by having her
baby there. I would probably also arm her with info on the ten steps to
successful breastfeeding in case she didn't have the option of going to a
better hospital, so she wasn't simply at the mercy of so-called health
professionals who would wait five days before starting her on expressing
milk for a sick baby, or who allow themselves to be bought off with trinkets
bearing the logo of formula companies, etc etc.
