Hi All,

Another U.S hospital phonomenon has reared it's ulgy head. The Hearing
test. Our hospital is now doing a hearing screening test on all babs before
discharge. The babs must be quiet for the test so moms are encouraged to
nurse them first. However.......if babies are still active for the test the
RNs have no problem popping in a pacifier for the test. It then goes into
the crib for mom to use as needed. This just boils my blood.... No
permission, no thought about consequences........nada. I have not said
anything YET because I will not win any popularity contest over this one.
The nurses will say "We are only using it for 20 minutes of this baby's
life".

I guess this is half vent and also a call for suggestions for ways I can
approach the nurses without them getting all pissed off.

Removing the pacifiers will make the hearing test harder for the nurses and
more babies will not pass. What do you all think??? Should I just do
nothing????? Is it worth the battle??

Thanks,
A lonely LC in Eureka California,
Star Siegfried RN,BA,IBCLC
