thats what I was originally told too, but then they did let me make an account
with out any purchases, I just lease the baby weigh for about 27-30$/month- I
don't pay the bill- there's some add on charges- for me it is well 
worth it b/c
I was fed up with my other scales just not being accurate enough to do test
weighs and also getting out of calibration- this way when its not 
working well,
I just trade it in- the other option is to rent from another medela account
person- look on their website for the one closest to you- it itll be up 
to that
renter how much they will charge you
